Swamp Birds
Solitary sandpiper inthe swamp.
When I think of sandpipers, beaches usually come to mind, but the solitary sandpiper does not follow that model. Whether breeding in the arctic, wintering in Central or South America, or migrating through Virginia, they are more likely to be found in marshlands and swamps. In the swamp that I explore here in southern Virginia Beach, I come across a wide variety of birds including bald eagles, wood ducks, herons, owls, anhingas, cormorants, osprey, prothonotary warblers, hummingbirds, Virginia rails, and sometimes, solitary sandpipers.
